Scagliola in the interiors of Baroque palaces and churches in Czechia – material investigation
Original language description
The imitation of marble can be achieved with different materials and techniques: scagliola, stucco lustro, marmorino, marezzo, etc. Recently, the artificial marble in scagliola (or stucco marble) technique applied to baroque altars throughout the Czech Republic started to be investigated. Ten samples were collected from various locations, including palaces, churches, and monasteries, representing diverse artistic and historical contexts. Samples generally consist of a superficial layer of artificial marble, occasionally overlaying a support plaster. The objective was to determine the chemical and mineralogical composition of the artificial marble and underlying mortars, providing insights into the materials and techniques used during the Baroque period. The analysis included optical microscopy for stratigraphy and microstructure assessment, scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDX) for detailed insight into the fine-grained composition, micro-Raman spectroscopy (pigment characterisation), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA/MS) for the characterisation of the binder.
