Contact Problem in Design of Concrete Roads
Original language description
In the paper, the steps necessary for further improvement of the design procedure for jointed concrete roads are discussed. The procedure considers the concrete pavement as a system of interacting slabs in contact with a structured pavement foundation. Focus is placed on system effects, the specific attention being given to the effect of the joint reinforcement. The reinforcing of transverse joints substantially reduces maximum bending moments (by 20% and more). The reinforcing of transverse joints substantially reduces maximum bending moments (by 20% and more). The reinforcing of longitudinal joints results in higher transferred loads between slabs but the concentrated loads induced by the action of reinforcing elements along the longitudinal slab edges cause higher local bending in edge zone and thus unfavourably effect the overall stressing of slabs. The role of pavement design is to keep these concentrated loads in acceptable limits.
