Automated infiltration-outflow experiment performed in MR scanner
Original language description
Infiltration-outflow laboratory experiments were conducted on undisturbed highly heterogeneous soil core to estimate unsaturated hydraulic properties. While transient part of the infiltration is consistent with unsaturated flow theory, the irregularitiesoccurred in that part of infiltration where the steady state is expected. To study the infiltration in detail, visualization of the water flow was suggested. Construction of experimental set-up was adapted meet specific requirements of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology. Samples were scanned to obtain 2D low-resolution vertical projection of the signal distribution of magnetic transient stages of the infiltration and the drainage. As in case of original experiment, data acquisition system wasinstalled to measure inflow, outflow and important pressures. The result is package of both image and hydraulic data.
