Statistically Optimized Periodic Unit Cells as Representatives of Random Microstructures
Original language description
In this contribution, a procedure is introduced for the generation of periodic unit cells consisting of a small number of particles approximating real complex microstructures. In particular, geometry of such a unit cell is derived from an optimization procedure formulated in terms of statistical descriptors characterizing a microstructure of random binary media. A number of numerical tests is presented to verify the performance of the implemented global optimization algorithm. The statistically optimized unit cells with increasing number of particles are constructed for a real microstructure of a graphite fiber tow impregnated by a polymer matrix.
