On Representative Volume Element Size for the Analysis of Masonry Structures
Original language description
This paper offers a simplified yet reasonably accurate approach to the modeling of large masonry structures on the basis of fully uncoupled multi-scale analysis. In attempt to avoid complicated and expensive laboratory experiments the relevant material parameters needed in the macroscopic analysis of full size structures, e.g., threedimensional segments of historical bridges, are derived from the numerical simulations on certain statistically equivalent periodic unit cells. A number of numerical experiments were carried out to address the concept of the required size of the representative volume element (RVE) and the question of applicability of the concept of periodic unit cells in the context of strain softening materials. The presented results clearly promote the smallest periodic unit cell to serve as a reliable RVE in the derivation of the macroscopic material parameters.
