Comparison of Two Conceptually Different Pesticide Leaching Models in a Vadose Zone
Original language description
The water flow and solute transport through the soil profile was simulated using two conceptually different numerical codes. The data from the field experiment, performed at Kunia site, serves for the comparison purposes. Previous studies suggested thataggregate structure of Hawaiian Oxisols at Kunia contributes to accelerated leaching of chemicals. For that reason, we had to apply a numerical model capable of simulating water movement and solute transport through the preferential pathways. The preferential flow hypothesis was subsequently proved by relatively deep penetration of bromide tracer in response to natural rainfall and irrigation. Besides the modeling part, a new research project was proposed with several improved features. The project wascarried out to elucidate the potential impacts of selected pesticides on groundwater and to understand pesticide behavior in tropical soils.
