Modeling Seasonal Soil Water Dynamics in a System with Preferential Pathways
Original language description
In macroporous soils, preferential flow usually develops under specific conditions. During rainstorm events, when rainfall intensity is greater than the infiltration capacity of the soil matrix, macropores may actively contribute to a fast transfer of soil water from the soil surface to deeper soil horizons. Shallow subsurface runoff often represents significant component of the overall watershed response to a storm. 1D dual-continuum model of variably saturated flow is used to study soil water dynamicsat an experimental site during a summer season. The simulation results are compared with the observations of soil water pressure and subsurface water discharge. The analysis reveals well defined periods of deep percolation interspersed with longer lasting periods when soil water movement is confined to a shallow stratum below the soil surface. The application of dual-continuum approach leads to improved prediction of the local contribution to the formation of areal subsurface runoff.
