Original language description
Considerably different approach to the analysis of masonry structures is offered through the application of multi-scale analysis combined with periodic homogenization exploiting the concept of periodic unit cell. In such a case the true geometry of the masonry structure can be reflected even for structures with irregular arrangement of bricks or stone blocks in case of quarry masonry. Such an approach requires the knowledge of material properties including fracture energies and interfacial properties, of individual phases - bricks and mortar. Determination of these properties from carefully prepared laboratory tests is thus the main goal of this contribution. A special attention is paid to the determination of fracture energy of individual constituents. Apart from that, a set of large scale specimens is tested to provide macroscopic response used in turn for comparison with numerical simulation based on first order homogenization.
