Original language description
Together with the available computational power the driving engines contributing to a rapid evolution of new solution strategies for the design and verification of earth structures include unfortunately also catastrophic failures of these structures. Dump slopes or earth dams fit well within the category of structures prone to such failures. In this context the probabilistic analysis receives a considerable attention, especially when combined with risk analysis. The risk, presented as the value of the probability of failure multiplied by the cost spent on removing the consequences of failure, is much a stronger argument for the selection of even more expensive technologies for the construction than just the probability of failure itself. This field ofexpertise, however, is not the main topic of this paper.
