An Improved Material Model for Quarry Masonry
Original language description
The present paper is motivated by the need of finding a suitable material model for a 3D analysis of filling masonry in stone bridges. The proposed model describes the behaviour of quarry masonry on mesostructural (mesoscopic) level. Both basic components, i.e. the stone blocks and mortar joints, are viewed as quasibrittle materials. Their basic feature is strain softening, which - in dependence on fracture toughness of both components - manifests itself by the localization of inelastic strains mainly into the mortar beds between stones. In contradiction to classical models, in which the behaviour of the mortar bed is described by means of contact elements, in the proposed model both the stones and mortar beds are discretized using finite elements. Only the reduced adhesion and tensile strength of the "stone -mortar" interface are then grasped by the contact elements and Mohr-Coulomb law.
