Hydraulic Conductivity and Entrapped Air in Heterogeneous Soil: Experimental Set-up
Original language description
Heterogeneous soils exhibit distinct saturated hydraulic conductivity variation in response to the changes in entrapped gas content. Entrapped air bubbles can influence the results of hydraulic characterization by transient methods done on large soil columns. Measurements of entrapped air volume and hydraulic properties of soil present significant experimental challenges due to need for water-gas separation at the soil core boundaries and complex experimental setup. We will present a design of the infiltration disc and the water collection assembly which allow separating and quantification of air and water fluxes. Results of numerical modelling of flow in proximity of the infiltration disc will be given to elucidate influence of the disc design to thewater flow. Infiltration disc and the water collection assembly are the key parts of the proposed automated set-up designed to measure the effective parameters of hydraulic and transport characteristic under varying entrapped air content.
