Urban road spaces are the most important public places in cities and settlements. These spaces not only serve for transport, but also provide a framework for other diverse life activities, which is reflected by various requirements and functions. These targets are reached through "traffic calming" whose main principles and procedures are the subject of this article. Together with them, the article presents the development and implementation process of principal legislative rules and regulations governing traffic calming strategies in the Czech Republic. It also includes recommendations for the selection of traffic calming measures suitable for specific design conditions
