Development of sprayed backfill technology
Original language description
The sprayed backfill technology will be used for filling up access galleries of the deep geological repository of radioactive wastes produced by nuclear power plants. It is a technology that has already been experimentally tested at several workplaces abroad. The basic sprayed material is bentonite, which is a natural ecological material fulfilling the demands for applications in the construction of engineered barriers of the deep geological repository. Among these demands there are, in particular, swelling capacity, impermeability, high plasticity and self-healing ability. Spraying will serve for backfilling underground spaces inaccessible for ordinary machinery. The space filled up by sprayed backfill must eliminate the penetration of hazardous radionuclides with the same level of perfection as the remaining space backfilled by made-up and mechanically compacted natural bentonite, or its mix with crushed rock.
