NANOINDENTATION OF ALKALI-ACTIVATED FLY ASH
Original language description
Low calcium ground fly ash was activated with a sodium-silicate solution and cured under ambient and heat conditions. Nanoindentation was employed for the characterization of reaction product, mainly alumino-silicate gel (N-A-S-H gel). Samples were indented by series of grids consisting hundreds of indents each. The intrinsic Young's modulus of N-A-S-H gel was found to be around the mean value 17.7 GPa, regardless on the curing procedure. Other characteristic phases were also identified, namely partly-activated slag, non-activated slag and fly ash particles. Results of pore size distributions measured by mercury intrusion porosimetry (MIP) were systematically observed depending on the curing procedure. Additional measurements with the same methodologywere carried out on cement paste samples. The synthetized N-A-S-H gel was found to be mechanically very close to C-S-H gels in matured cement pastes.
