Influence of Weathering Processes on Sandstones - Simulation of Prague Winter Climatic Conditions

  • Original language description

Sandstones were often used as a main historical building material in the Czech Republic. As any other building material they undergo weathering processes and so are demaged. In this article there are described the basic factors of weathering processes and their influence on the durability of sandstones. The range of the deterioration of rock depends on the petrography and on the changes initiated. For the simulation of weathering processes, which are typical for Prague climatic conditions, the data fromwinter season during last ten years were used. Three types of sandstone (Hořice, Božanov and Kocbeře) often used in the Czech Republic were tested during this experiment. The developed changes in the internal structure and in the geotechnical propertieslike water absorption at atmospheric pressure, uniaxial compressive strength, apparent density and open porosity are studied. The changes in the cement composition have been observing using DTA analysis and X-Ray diffraction.
