The Rise of Global Metropolises
Original language description
The paper presents a theoretical inquiry into the nature of modern cities. It starts with a particular characteristics of modernity and concludes that global metropolises - regional nodes within a world city network - are the key contemporary materializations of the process of modernity. Understanding to these metropolises, to the process of their construction and to the city-society relation in general is considered essential for overcoming the many environmental, social and political issues that are looming in front of us in near future. This article attempts to lay out the theoretical framework or background that connects cities, society, economy, technology and globalization in contemporary times. It is based on a critical reflection of several broader theories that encompass these areas of inquiry and on a search for their common ground. However, the leading research questions remains: What is a modern city? And how the process of urbanization proceeds?
