Use of X-ray computed tomography for study of sandstone used for the reconstruction of the Charles bridge in Prague
Original language description
Sandstones were often used mainly as building material in medieval Prague. Weathering processes lead to damage of these stones and to changes in their durability. The range of the deterioration depends on petrography, including internal structure, the mineral composition and cementation type, and also changes initiated. The stone's properties are negatively influenced especially during the winter frost. A special weathering simulation program was developed to enable study the durability of sandstone inPrague winter climatic conditions. Changes developing in the internal structure were studied by Hg porosimetry and X-ray microtomography. Basic mechanical-physical properties such as uniaxial compressive strength and open porosity were also studied during this experiment. The Kocbeře cretaceous sandstone used for the last reconstruction of the Charles bridge in Prague were tested during this experiment.
