3.3 Fibre optics
Original language description
Fibre optic sensing systems were included into the novel techniques for monitoring of structures ageing as these systems allow for capturing of the continuous strain profile within the structure. Structural integration of fibre optic sensing systems represents a new branch of engineering which involves the unique marriage of: fibre optics, optoelectronics and composite material science. Optical fibre sensors have a number of advantages over their electrical counterparts.
