The Josef Regional Underground Research Centre (Josef URC) forms an integral part of the Centre of Experimental Geotechnics, a department of the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Czech Technical University in Prague. The main part of the Josef URC is made up of a large gallery which has been used for experimentation purposes since June 2007. The Josef gallery was originally excavated in the 1980s as part of the exploration of local gold-bearing deposits. The total length of the galleries is 8km, morethan 3.5km of which is currently in use. This unique underground research centre provides educational courses for students and young scientists, the ideal environment for in-situ experiments and guided tours for the general public. No other comparable science and technology park is currently in existence in the Czech Republic or elsewhere in Europe.
