Two-dimensional modeling of tunnel excavations enhanced by convergence measurements
Original language description
The study presents a modification to conventional finite element method in plane strain conditions to address the problem of successive excavation of linear parts of tunnels. First the convergence confinement method is discussed followed by the introduction of so called 2D3D finite element model. The model takes advantage of convergence curves in the longitudinal direction obtained by extensometric measurement during excavation, both in front of and behind the tunnel heading. It is therefore possible to extend the general formulation into 3D whilst maintaining the two dimensional format of the finite element mesh. A profile corresponding to city road tunnel Blanka in Prague and the corresponding convergence measurement is examined to verify the method. The results show that the method provides reasonably accurate results when compared to convergence confinement method without the need to subjectively determine the lambda parameter. It also significantly reduces the computational time of more accurate but complex 3D analysis thus allowing for the use in stochastic analysis. Civil-Comp Press, 2011.
