    In addition to describing repair of the Charles Bridge, the paper presents the general lessons learned: multi-decade response of a masonry structure, assessment of damages, failures and deterioration processes related to materials, environment, climate,structural arrangement and detailing, assessment of the masonry bridge with respect to heritage, historic and structural aspects, discussion on appropriate strategies for refurbishment, restoration, conservation and preservation corresponding to locationand significance of the historical bridge and ways to increase durability and long service life of historical bridges ensuring that they will be protected against harmful effects for many years to come.
