Searching for Minimax Designs of Experiments: A Parallel Evolutionary Approach

  • Original language description

Space-Filling Design Strategies known as Design of (Computer) Experiments (DoE) create an essential part of a surrogate modeling. Two main objectives are usually placed on the resulting designs - orthogonality and space-filling properties. The last decade has witnessed the development of several methods for the latter objective. One of the metrics, called minimax (mM) represents very interesting research area. Authors think that this metric seems as the most suitable one for practical purposes; howeverits computation for higher dimensions is intractable. Hence our contribution presents a new method on this subject. The core is the usage of the Evolution Strategy algorithm to estimate potential centers of the largest empty spheres. The minimax is thenthe radius of the biggest empty sphere. Therefore the proposed procedure is inexact, however has no memory problem and as is shown in the text, is suitable for parallelization. The serial and parallel versions of the proposed approach are
