Highway tunnelling started in the Czech Republic first after political changes in Europe in 1989 with the perspective of rapid integration of at that time small national motorway net system to the European one. In reality it meant construction of Motorway D5 to the West (Prague ? Pilsen ? Nuernberg D), Motorway D8 to the North (Prague ? Dresden D), Motorway D3 to the South (Prague ? Budweiss ? Linz A), Motorway D1 to the North-East (Brno/Brün ? Ostrava ? Katowice PL), Motorway R52 to the South (Brno/Brün ? Vienna A) and Motorway R48 (Brno/Brün ? Olomouc/Olmütz ? Krakow PL). For improving conditions of fast growing traffic in area of the Czech capital Prague, and eliminating of transit traffic in Prague, an outer motorway Prague City Ring Road R1 was proposed.
