Steel Fibre Reinforced Concrete for Tunnel Segmental Linings: Laboratory Testing and Numerical Modeling

  • Original language description

The steel fiber reinforced concrete (SFRC) is a relatively new structural material. Uniformly dispersed and randomly oriented steel fibers reinforce the structure of plain concrete and convert the brittle plain concrete to tough SFRC. SFRC can replace standard reinforced concrete (RC) with steel rebars, which is commonly used. Originally it was applied in Italy in the 1980s. However, higher number of applications occurred after 2000. The Czech Technical University (CTU) together with Metrostav carried out a research to evaluate usage of this new technology for tunnel linings in the Czech Republic. The utilization of steel fiber reinforced concrete instead of traditional reinforced concrete (RC) can bring, for some structures, many advantages. All advantages are given by the properties of SFRC, partly by strength properties, mainly by strain characteristics. The following benefits of SFRC segments can be mentioned: the possibility of reducing the cost of the tunnel lining structure, sim
