NON-CONTACT DIGITISATION AND VISUALISATION OF HISTORICAL GLOBES USING PHOTOGRAMMETRY

  • Original language description

This article deals with the topic of digitisation and visualisation of historical globes. At the present time there exist several methods of digitisation of the globes, mostly requiring the contact with the digitisation instrument or at least the manipulation with the globe. This is in most cases inacceptable for the restoration and archival specialists. We see as the best solution the use of today?s photogrammetrical techniques, namely the method of 3D shape reconstruction using the image correlation technique. What was in past decades possible only theoretically is now becoming regularly used in practice, due to the improvements in computer technology. However, there still exist specific problems which have to be solved in order to get a precise 3D model of the globe which will serve for the visualisation purposes. The reconstructed a 3D virtual model of a globe can be considered in itself as a final product which can be visualised online (for example with the use of Cortona web brow
