Phosphorus intake is a main reason of rivers, lakes and reservoirs eutrophication. Many sources of pollution in the watershed contribute to the degradation of water in varying degrees. To determine their impact and design of appropriate measures is necessary to know not only their overall balance in the basin, but also their eutrophication potential. The actual contribution of individual phosphorus sources in the eutrophication of the water body can vary greatly by source type, its location in the watershed, emitted forms of phosphorus and seasonality of the pollution. Article introduces first the method of assessment of rivers and water reservoirs eutrophication by phosphorus concentrations used in the Czech Republic for the purposes of the Water Framework Directive. On the example of procedure of vulnerable zones designation due to eutrophication by Nitrates Directive will be presented procedure how distinguish prevalent phosphorus sources by analysing the proportion of inorganic for
