Proposal of test specimen of cement composite for determining fracture toughness in bending
Original language description
Fracture toughness of cement-based composites is usually tested on samples with dimensions of 150x150x700 mm, weighing about 40 kg. These samples are not only expensive for the amount of material, but also their preparation involves difficult manipulation to create an indentation (notch) by using a diamond-coated blade, which can only be performed by qualified personnel. A new sample with a special initial crack was developed for our experiments, whose mass is a quarter of the weight of the original sample and that does not require machine intensive techniques for creating (cutting) notch. The aim of this work is to prove the possibility to obtain valid fracture toughness values of quality consistent with the theory of fracture mechanics by using thisnew sample.
