Comparison of Methods for the Determination of Building Stone Pore Space Properties

  • Original language description

As any other building material, stones undergo to weathering processes and, therefore, their internal structure is modified. The pore space, which forms the internal structure, influences physical-mechanical properties of these stones. Generally, increase of porosity leads to their deterioration. Quantitative evaluation of changes in pore structure helps in interpretation of the effects of various weathering processes and can by useful in the process of reconstruction and restoration of historical building stones. There are several methods enabling the study of pore space and each of them has its own limitations and provides different type of results, which are more or less comparable and they are not revealing themselves. The main aim of this paper is to provide the information on three methods – Hg porosimetry, UV microscopy and X-Ray microtomography and to compare the their results. These methods were used for the study of pore space of three types of Czech Cretaceous sandstones, which were treated by freeze/thaw cycles in a climatic chamber. The changes in the internal structure were determined before and after climatic treatment. The obtained results were compared with each other, and therefore the brand new view on the internal structure of the sandstone was enabled.
