Mechanical Properties of Single and Double-Layered PVA Nanofibers

  • Original language description

The nanotextiles with a special treatment, such as antibacterial agents, find their application in many industries or medicine. It would be cost effective to apply the treatment only on the surface layer of composite nanofiber textiles. However, the individual layers are laid in more stages and the question whether the connection is perfectly stiff arises. In our work two kinds of PVA nanofiber textile samples, having the weight of 1.3 g/m2 (single-layered, AI) and 2.8 g/m2 (double-layered, AII), were tested. Prior to the testing of mechanical properties on the macro-level, the microstructure was investigated by means of atomic force microscope (AFM). The study revealed that the average tensile strength (24 N/mm for AI and 51 N/mm for AII) and stiffness (950 N/mm for AI and 1600 N/mm for AII), are independent of the number of layers, only their weight per unit area matters. This indicates that a perfectly stiff bond between the individual layers is formed due to cross-linking of the la
