Glass load bearing element subjected to compression
Original language description
In the modern architecture glass has unique place due to optical properties and transparency. Nowadays, glass is not used only as a window panel but it is used also for load bearing structural elements. Realization of structural elements subjected to bending, such as glass beams, railings and stairs are quite common. On the contrary the structural elements subjected to the compression are practically absent, although the glass strength in compression is significantly higher than the tensile strength. Greater use of these elements prevents the lack of information about their behavior under load or in the accidental situation. This paper summarizes the experimental results of glass columns loaded by centric pressure, which were performed in the laboratories of the CTU in Prague, Faculty of Civil Engineering. The first set of experiments was composed of three specimens in a reduced scale 1:2 to verify real behavior of glass column with hollow section under centric compression and to deter
