Experimental Investigation into the Water Flow in Near-Saturated Soils
Original language description
Many subsurface hydrological processes of engineering and enviromental relevance occur under near-saturated conditions. These processes involve e.g. the infiltration into the topsoil during high intensity rainfalls, surface-groundwater interaction in landscape depressions with ponds, water flow, solute and oxygen transport across the capillary fringes and in natural and constructed wetlands, and tidal periodic occurence of capillary fringe in coastal aquifers. However, the current models often fail to predict water flow and solute transport in the near-saturated porous medium, since the theoretical assumptions of these models are not fulfilled. These effect of main importance occurring close to saturation are the air trapping and preferential flow.
