Functional characteristics of bitumen modified by pulverized rubber and selected chemical catalysts and/or additives
Original language description
Until quite recently, there has been considerable interest in the use of research in crumb rubber modified bitumen (CRMB). This interest is prompted by restrictions for land-filling of old tires and their use as energy source (solid fuel) e.g. in cement production. Simultaneously, asphalt technologists expect that the use of higher content of crumb rubber in bitumen can further enhance the noise reducing potential if used in appropriate acoustic sphalt mixes. In addition, using crumb rubber as a modifier helps to narrow the wide gap between the application between conventional bitumen and polymer modified binder (PMB). At the Czech Technical University in Prague, different types of micro-pulverized rubber has been used and evaluated together with chemical catalysts suitable for temporary devulcanization of the rubber. In addition, to improve the homogeneity and storage stability of the CRMB selected additives have been tested. Traditional as well as performance-based tests were carried out on all bitumen samples. Traditional tests include ring and ball, penetration and elastic recovery tests. Performance-based tests were carried out using the dynamic shear rheometer (frequency sweeps at test temperatures ranging from 20 to 60°C. The multiple stress creep recovery test was performed at 60°C. Dynamic viscosity was also evaluated. This paper summarizes findings from these test results and made recommendations on the most suitable combinations of bitumen – CR content – catalyst and additive.
