Variations in unconfined strength results of highly compacted bentonite blocks with respect to various aspects of testing procedures and specimen characteristics

  • Original language description

Several standards and recommendations for compression strength testing exist and may be apllied (e. g. CSN CEN ISO/ TS 17892-7 - Test for unconfined compressive strength for fine-grained soils; CSN EN 1926 - Natural stone testing methods - Determination of compressive strength; International Society for Rock Mechanics on Determination of the uniaxial Compressive Strength Rock of Materials). Specimen characteristics (size, shape, aspect ratio...) of the samples can vary according to the standard requirements. The aspect ratio is required most often between 2 and 3but, for example, CSN EN 1926 requires value of 1. Non uniform requirements on specimens can lead to different test results. Moreover samples extracted from in-situ experiments must not have sufficient size (or shape) to follow standard requirements. Therefore the paper shows effect of various factors (size, shape, aspect ratio) on the unconfined compressive strength results of highly compacted blocks. Effect of water content and velocity of samples compaction during manufacturing is also demonstrated.
