SOIL SWELLING PROBLEMS IN THE HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION
Original language description
There are the frequent problems with the soil swelling in the highway construction in the past time. This phenomenon is known for ten of years and it is not practically pondered in technical order for the transport structures (and in a vague manner in the some transport standards). This situation is notably given by insufficient knowledge of this problem and low level know – how of the whole swelling process. The authors inform the technical public with their current knowledge due to above mentioned reasons. After short description of the impact of swelling on the pavements the authors describe the relationship for swelling characterization in detail. There is shown in the paper that the equations for determination of the swelling pressure, time of swelling and relative deformation can be obtained on the ground of the non-linear regression analysis of the index test soils. This analysis was performed in the firm GeoTec-GS,a.s. on the large data sets from geological investigation of the many construction in the Czech and Slovak Republic (tuffaceous clays, mudstones, claystones, chalk marlites and neogene clays). At the end of the paper is described the impact of the soil stabilization using lime. The swelling induces considerable amount of the problems not only in the transportation constructions and therefore needs heightened focus.
