Length changes of autoclaved aerated concrete exposed to cyclic wetting and drying

  • Original language description

The linear hygric expansion coefficient, alpha(w), of three commonly used autoclaved aerated concretes (AAC) is determined as a function of moisture content by volume, w, in the range from capillary water saturation to dry state in two consecutive wetting-drying cycles. A hyperbolic function alpha(w)(w) = A/w(2) is proposed as the most suitable mathematical representation of the experimental data, for an application in the hygro-mechanical computer simulation tools. A basic assessment of the supposed hygro-mechanical performance of the investigated AAC in common building structures shows that the current standards do not provide much help to the designers because they treat the moisture-induced length changes of AAC in a rather simplistic way. Therefore, a characteristic hygric strain defined by the length change between two typical hygric equilibrium states is proposed instead, for obtaining a basic estimate of the maximum tensile stress. In the case such estimate leads to unfavorable
