Uniaxial Shear Tester
Original language description
Part of the presentation: In 1974 McLean recognized that rutting is caused by combination of densification (decrease in volume and increase in density) and shear deformation and it may occur in any or all pavement layers and further for well compacted layers available information suggest that the shear deformation rather than densification is primary rutting mechanism.1994 – Monismith and collective summarized series of asphalt mixture performance related tests for analyzing asphalt aggregate properties that significantly affect pavement performance. In this report are also summarized methods to define permanent deformation characteristics and one of the methods was simple shear test at constant height. In 2000 – Under Westrack project were developed performance models for permanent deformations. Such a models are nowadyas called as transfer functions, and these from WesTrack project utilize asphlat mixture properties measured in shear to pavement rutting calcualtion. Than I picked two prof. Harvey’s papers. These two contributions summarize the relation of shear testing to asphalt mixture design in 2001 and 2002.As last one I picked Von Quintus’s NCHRP report from year 2012. In this report are assessed known tests utilized to relate laboratory measured parameters to pavement permanent deformation, also known transfer functions and the assessment of most suitable ones was further carried on. At the end of the report the asphalt mixture shear properties and inclusion of WesTrack transfer functions is recommended into DarWin-ME program to calculate the rut depth of pavements.
