Numerical model of pillars made from masonry with and without mortar in perpend joints
Original language description
The calculation method for determination of load-bearing capacity of eccentrically compressed masonry walls and pillars included in ČSN EN 1996-1-1 [1] was originally developed for masonry with perpend joints fully filled by mortar. Currently, most of masonry load-bearing structures in the Czech Republic are made from clay blocks without mortar in the perpend joints. The paper summarizes the results of numerical analysis conducted with the aim to roughly compare the behavior of masonry pillars with filled and unfilled perpend joints under both vertical and horizontal loading. Planar FEM model created in ATENA Science software was used for the analysis. The results confirmed that the approaches contained in ČSN EN 1996-1-1 [1] are basically applicable for pillars with unfilled perpend joints as well.
