Ventilated underground tunnel as a contribution for sustainable refurbishment of buildings affected by rising moisture

  • Original language description

Additional protection of ground part of older buildings against subsurface water and ground moisture is one of the most important measures to ensure their long-time durability and satisfactory user properties. One of the most used remediation method are air ducts which principle is to enable an air flow along the surface of moist structures and to ensure sufficient evaporation of moisture from the structure. A special type of this method is underground ventilated tunnel situated along the perimeter walls. This technical solution allows there mediation of historic buildingsbecause it does not interfere in the building structure and does not modify the appearance of the building. The problem is, however, that the contemporary structural design of the ventilated tunnels is based on the masonry structure which does not have a sufficient durability and it is also laborious. The paper introduces a new technical solution of this method based on the special shaped concrete blocks with crystalline admixture used inside the concrete structure. This solution is structurally simple (low labor difficulty) and also highly durable. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated by the results of the laboratory tests, moisture is measured by electrical resistivity method.
