Fly ash based mixtures for pavement structures modified by advanced additives

  • Original language description

This paper focuses on utilization of stabilized mixtures with new chemical or nano-chemical additives and coal combustion by-products, especially fly ashes from soft coal power plants in pavement structures. Fly ash as by-product from coal combustion is still used in limited extent ways and presently a lot of these materials in the Czech Republic are still stored on dumps. This paper shows possible utilization of fly ash in road structures, especially in base and sub-base layers, where it can substitute part of natural resources (soils or aggregates). Concurrently it contributes to improve final strength properties of these bond layers. Unfortunately fly ash has relatively small resistance to repeated impact of water and freezing (i.e. frost resistance) leading to volume changes (swelling). Therefore this paper deals with possibilities how to improve stabilized fly ash based mixtures by new chemical or nano-chemical additives, which protect base or sub-base layers against degradation caused by water and frost impacts.
