The positive impact of green roofs on mitigation of the urban heat island effect
Original language description
Green roofs represent the reintroduction and inclusion of vegetation and biodiversity in the built urban environment. The integration of vegetation in the form of green roofs in urban areas is particularly important to maintain cool built urban environment because buildings, streets and other infrastructures increase the heat absorption, which results in the urban heat island effect. The role of green roofs is very important mainly due to their benefits that improve the quality of the environment. This paper attempts to evaluate the positive impact of green roofs to mitigate the urban heat island effect through monitoring air temperature, air humidity, and surface temperature between a conventional roof and an extensive green roof located in Rio de Janeiro. The objective of this study is to determine how effective green roofs are in mitigating the urban heat island effect.
