Effects of rejuvenators on properties of aged bitumen from reclaimed asphalt and on performance of asphalt mixture containing such material

  • Original language description

Reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) contains bituminous binder with high degree of degradation. This generally affects performance behavior of asphalt mixtures if higher levels of RAP are used as partial substitute to virgin aggregates and bitumen. Rejuvenators are materials that can be added into the RAP to improve the properties of the present aged bituminous binder. The testing on laboratory aged binders showed that the addition of rejuvenators causes not only the softening effect but it can also improve the binder rheological properties and therefore introduce a higher added value of remobilized bitumen contained by the RAP. Furthermore, some rejuvenators enhance the binder resistance to oxidative hardening. Effects of RAP improved by rejuvenators were determined also on selected asphalt mixtures focusing on durability and performance based behavior representing different climatic or loading conditions. Some of the results related mainly to water susceptibility and deformation behavior are presented in this paper.
