Prestressed stayed compression columns made of stainless steels are becoming required as aesthetical slender load bearing members. In the paper are summarized published analytical values concerning in-plane elastic critical loads and numerical collapse results of stayed columns made of low carbon steels with respect to their geometry and level of prestressing. Subsequently the FE model using ANSYS software is described to solve critical buckling loads and post-buckling paths with regards to 3D GMNIA (geometrically and materially nonlinear analysis with imperfections). Former CTU in Prague tests and recent detailed analyses of other authors are commented with respect to the presented 3D analysis. The comparisons deal with differences of 2D and 3D buckling, influence of initial deflection level, boundary conditions at central crossarm (fixed or sliding stays) and nonlinear stainless steel material. The value of friction of sliding stays at the crossarm and influence of material nonlinearity proved to be substantial especially for antisymmetrical buckling modes. Finally some recommendations for FE modelling and introduction of initial deflections are given.
