Use of Aerial Images for Classification of Forest Cover

  • Original language description

Forest state and development monitoring is a very important task for many countries. The following text describes this, which is currently solved by the Forest Management Institute (hereinafter FMI) in cooperation with the Land Survey Office (LSO) in the Czech Republic (CR). The cooperation is based on sharing of spatial data. LSO periodically provides digital aerial images, elevation data and other map products for FMI. FMI uses these data for the second cycle of the National Forest Inventory (NFI2). In the NFI2, the visual stereo image interpretation of the colour-infrared (CIR) aerial images is used to conduct the categorization of the land use/land cover classes. This information is subsequently used as a training data set for the object-based image classification of CIR orthophotomap and normalized digital surface model. This technique is used to produce the nationwide forest thematic maps such as forest borders, conifers/broad leaved forests and stand height classes. Currently, there is an effort to integrate information from forest thematic maps into the Fundamental Base of Geographic Data (FBGD) of the CR. FBGD is the true geographical digital vector model of the Czech territory. This integration will improve the usability of FBGD for new environmental applications. This subject is dealt within LSO and the Department of Geomatics, Czech Technical University in Prague.
