FINE RECYCLED CONCRETE POWDER USED AS FILLER AND CEMENT REPLACEMENT IN NEW CONCRETE

  • Original language description

Re-use of concrete waste is actual problem due to sustainable construction. In 2012 European Union produced 2.5 billion tons of waste and almost 33 % was demolition and construction waste. Many researchers use recycled concrete aggregate instead on natural aggregate. But complete recycling methods, including fines fraction of concrete waste, need to be improve. There are attempts to reuse fines part of concrete waste as raw material for clinker production or thermally activated binder. However, still this procedure consumes significant amount of energy and release CO2. Thus some other methods are needed to utilize fines concrete waste in a sustainable and environmentally-friendly way. One way is applying fines fraction of concrete waste together with fly-ash as a geopolymer binder. In our study we attempt to use fines concrete waste as mechanically activated binder replacement and filler in new concrete. We used recycled concrete powder produced by LAVARIS Ltd. which is activated by high-speed milling process. Since fines concrete waste contains high amount of cement mortar and some cement grains not yet to be fully hydrated, there is possibility to expose their reactive part by high-speed mill. That method can help implement fines concrete waste as partial replacement for ordinary cement and filler. As consequences the environmental impact of concrete waste production and cement production can be reduced.
