Sustainable Concrete and Concrete Structures - Challenge for a Sustainable Future

  • Original language description

The special properties of concrete like affordability, availability and variability in connection with strength and durability has made concrete the most used construction material in the world. In consequence of a fact that world cement production has been 12 times increased in the second half of the last century, the cement industry produces at present about 7–8% of global man-made CO2 emissions. Moreover, high amount of concrete use is associated with high transport needs and demands on production and demolition processes within the entire life cycle. This causes additional environmental impacts. During last decades the term sustainability penetrated into consideration of the most experts. Today hardly anybody doubts about importance of approaches, methods and technologies focused on development and production of products with high quality of functional performance, reduced environmental impacts and high quality of social and economical parameters. Changing climate, increasing number of natural disasters and increasing social problems including migration and terrorism are generating needs for robust and resilient solutions in building and civil engineering construction. In this focus the use of advanced concrete structures represents important potential in the way towards future sustainable built environment – to be environmentally friendly, cost efficient and in the same time robust and resilient.
