Stability of a steel tube arch supporting barrel type textile roof membranes

  • Original language description

Following extensive tests of a single built-in tubular steel arch and the identical arch supporting roofing in the form of textile membranes fastened to the arch the numerical analysis is presented. The membrane made of prestressed PVC coated polyester fabric Ferrari® Précontraint 702S was used as a currently standard and perfect material. The tests and results oriented to the loss of in-plane and out-of-plane stability of the arch is briefly described. SOFiSTiK software was employed to model the test set-up and analyze the structural behavior in 3D, using geometrically nonlinear analysis with imperfections (GNIA) and orthotropic membrane behavior. The numerical results were validated using test data based on various membrane prestressing with excellent agreement. Finally results of vast parametric studies concerning stability of a central arch in the five arch assembly which supports a textile membrane roofing are presented. Enormous savings in the steel arch tubes due to a membrane supporting effect is revealed, leading to omission of stability check concerning out-of-plane arch buckling.
