Research on gas permeability of rock environment based on experimental in-situ measurement

  • Original language description

The thesis aims to the behaviour of fractured crystalline rock masses. The first group of objectives include the study of the influence of the damaged/disturbed zone around underground openings on gas transport. The second objective is connected with the study of processes and the simulation of possible scenarios in future DGRs using experiments. The experiments were aimed principally at the study of the mechanical responses (hydro-mechanical behaviour) of a rock mass loaded by gas. The final objective was the determination of possible correlations between rock mass gas permeability and rock mass classification systems. An extensive series of gas and water injection tests was carried out in a number of boreholes located in the crystalline rock environment of the Josef Underground Research Laboratory (URL). Numerous borehole in-situ tests, together with information from other geological investigation campaigns performed over a period of 5 years, provided unique datasets for the study of crystalline rock characteristics and behaviour related to gas flow. Research contributions include the developed and extensively tested methodology of gas injection tests in various rock mass conditions ranging from low permeable to highly-conductive rock zones and the determination of the degree of accuracy for the evaluation of single borehole gas injection tests using analytical solutions. The tests and analysis helped to define the role of disturbed and undisturbed rocks in terms of the safety of underground facilities, and the last no less important contribution consists of the development of an empirical formula describing the relationship between gas permeability and RMi rock mass classification index values.
