Wood Chips Ash as Pozzolana Active Admixture for Mortars

  • Original language description

In this paper we focused at the analysis of the possible use of biomass ash coming from wood chips combustion as pozzolanic admixture in mortar mix design. Biomass ash was characterized by XRF, SEM, and EDS analyses. The pozzolanic activity of the ash was tested using a modified Chapelle test. As the examined ash was pozzolana active, it was used as partial PC replacement in the composition of cement-based mortars. The PC replacing ratio was 10 and 15 wt. %. For the hardened mortar samples, bulk density, matrix density and total open porosity were accessed. The pozzolanic activity of biomass ash was verified also using the measurement of mortars mechanical parameters and calculation of strength activity index. All these measurements were performed for 28 and 180 days hardened samples. Mechanical strength data showed, an application of ash coming from wood chips combustion in the amount up to 15 mass % of cement provided sufficient mechanical resistance of cement-based mortars. For 180 days cured samples, the strength activity index was 86.2% for 10 mass% of PC replacement, and 81.2% for 15% cement substitution. This data clearly characterizes the pozzolanic reactivity of the examined ash that slightly retarded strength evolution. On the other hand, the final strength values are high and give biomass ash potential for its use in cement-based materials. In summary, the analyzed ash was found to be prospective material for construction industry contributing to the reduction of energy for clinkering, CO2 emission and mining of raw materials for PC production.
