Characterization of Micromechanical Properties of Different Types of Portland and Blended Cements

  • Original language description

In this paper, micro-mechanical response and mi-crostructure characterization of three cement pastes from commercially available cements are investigated. Portland cement (CEM I) and two Blended cements (CEM III, CEM V) with different amount of admixtures are studied. Grid nanoindentation, statistical deconvolution, light and scan-ning electron microscopy were used for characterization of the main hydration product at microscale. About 800 indents were performed on each sample. Similar mechanical re-sponse was found corresponding to C-S-H gel with E = 32-36 GPa, but with 56 % higher fraction for CEM I. Blended cements contain phase that corresponding to hydration reac-tion of fly ash and slag, with E = 19-23 GPa and more un-hydrated particles with higher dimensions than in CEM I.
