Experimental analysis of glass bricks and mortar used for glass bricks masonry
Original language description
Glass is considered as a traditional material for building industry, but flat glass was mostly used for glazing of the windows in the past. At present, flat float glass is also increasingly used on supporting structural elements such as beams, columns, ribs or walls. There is also strong effort to use other glass products such as tubes and hollow blocks in addition to flat glass. How-ever, using glass as structural material started at the beginning of 20th century, when masonry from hollow glass blocks were used. Using solid glass brick is very rare and only a few structures with solid glass bricks walls have been built in the last years. The paper is focused on experimental verification of key components for the solid glass bricks masonry. Small-scale tests were used to determine flexural strength and modulus of elasticity of glass bricks and compressive strength, flexural strength and modulus of elasticity of mortar. Critical evaluation of the experimental re-sults was used to select the appropriate mortar for subsequent experimental testing and numerical modelling of glass brick masonry.
